After an atypically rainy weekend, the National Weather Service reports that a new storm system may be heading toward the Cayman Islands.

The agency sent out a bulletin Thursday evening reporting a disturbance in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico that could reach the islands between Friday and Tuesday.

“The area may develop into a tropical system, but the timing at which it could develop is currently unknown,” the bulletin said.

The weather service expects the heaviest rainfall to occur Monday.

Impacts from the system could hit Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac, where the forecast said an inch of rain could fall.

Last Monday, Grand Cayman received more than six inches of rain in one day, almost a month a day. After the storm, leaders including Governor Jane Owen reminded the community to prepare for the potential of an “extremely active” hurricane season.

The weather service plans to notify the public tomorrow at 6 p.m.
