SPENCER – The most popular event of the year returns to the NC Transportation Museum in Spencer this month as the museum hosts its annual Fire Truck Festival on June 22. This family-favorite gathering of fire engines and fire departments from across the region is the largest single-day event of the entire year at the NC Transportation Museum. Visitors to the museum in historic Spencer can enjoy the Fire Truck Festival from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Housed in what was once Southern Railway’s Spencer Shops facility for steam locomotive maintenance, the museum has a strong connection with firefighting. The Spencer Shops Fire Brigade was formed in the 1920s to tackle any fires in the Southern Railway’s shops. The department consisted of teams of eleven men each with three reels, operating 600 meters of 6.5 cm fire hose. Because many Southern Railway employees lived in neighboring towns, firefighters from the Spencer Shops Fire Department also responded to calls from the nearby community and assisted local fire departments, which were dependent on volunteers and may not be available to fight fires to fight. at all hours of the day.

A wide variety of antique and modern fire trucks will be on display for photo opportunities. The fire brigade will be present all day to visit families.

“This is one of our favorite events, especially because the fire departments are so welcoming and willing to talk to families about the important work they do,” said Kelly Alexander, executive director of the NC Transportation Museum.

The Fire Truck Festival is sponsored by Atlantic Emergency Solutions, compleatKiDZ and Norfolk Southern.

“An event like this wouldn’t be possible without the generous support of our sponsors and partners,” Alexander said.

Joining the fun are NC Forestry, the Charlotte Fire Department Safety Education Team and Atrium Health’s Helicopter & Children’s Specialty Ambulance. Other activities throughout the day include Discovery Maps for children, inflatable games, ‘jaws of life’ demonstrations, a firefighter costume competition for children, operating model trains and more.

Train rides operate all day at 10am, 11am, 12pm, 1pm and 2pm, and can be combined with festival admission for $18 for adults, $16 for seniors/military, $14 for children ages 3-12. age, and free for members and children under 3 years.
