New Delhi, June 15, 2024
The government has allocated 160 mobile phone series in the first phase for making transactional and service calls for all entities regulated by RBI, SEBI, IRDAI and PFRDA to prevent citizens from being misled by the fraudsters.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) met with representatives of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) and other financial institutions and all the telecom service providers (TSPs).

Once deployed, the 160 mobile series will assist in the easy identification of the calling entity.

The meeting provided a platform for the exchange of ideas between the regulators, entities and telecom providers on the effective use of these ranges, the Ministry of Communications said.

The operation of the 140 series, which is currently used for promotional purposes, will be migrated to the distributed ledger technology (DLT) platform and digital consent scrubbing will also be operationalized, the ministry said.

“With the implementation of the above two measures, a substantial check on spam calls from ten-digit numbers is expected,” the ministry said.

During the meeting, the regulators, banks and other financial institutions emphasized on the need to work together to curb the menace of spam, especially through phone calls, and assured all cooperation for implementation of various initiatives by TRAI in a time-bound manner. (Agency)
