Bari (Italy): The talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Italian counterpart Giorgia Meloni have taken the strategic partnership between India and Italy to new heights. In recent years, Italy has become a strong partner of India. Now the relationship between India and Italy is moving to a new high. This is a new chapter in relations between the two countries. During the G7 Summit, Prime Minister Modi along with his counterpart Meloni discussed the progress of the bilateral strategic partnership between the two countries. In addition, they agreed to strengthen cooperation in global fora and multilateral proposals, including the India-West Asia-Europe Economic Corridor.

It is believed that with Italy’s strong support to India, India’s influence in the India-Europe Economic Corridor will further increase in the coming days. Prime Minister Modi met Meloni on Friday at the end of his one-day visit to Apulia in southern Italy. Modi also thanked the Italian Prime Minister for inviting him to the G7 summit. The Ministry of External Affairs, in a press release on the meeting, said the leaders expressed their commitment to achieving their shared vision for an open and free Indo-Pacific region and also discussed the India-West Asia-Europe Economic Corridor.

Italy will support India against China

Amid China’s aggressive activities in the region, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said: “Both leaders look forward to joint activities that will be implemented within the prepared framework to realize their shared vision for a free and open Indo-Pacific region. ” It said they also discussed key regional and global issues and agreed to strengthen cooperation in global forums and multilateral proposals, including the India-West Asia-Europe Economic Corridor. The India-West Asia-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) project envisions a vast road, rail and shipping system between Saudi Arabia, India, America and Europe. The strategic partnership between India and Italy will also be strengthened

IMEC was finalized last year during the G20 summit in Delhi. It said: “The two leaders expressed satisfaction over the regular political dialogue and reviewed the progress of the India-Italy strategic partnership. They expressed happiness over growing trade and economic cooperation and called for expanding commercial ties in clean energy, manufacturing, space, science and technology, telecommunications, artificial intelligence and critical minerals.” The press release stated: “In this context, they welcomed the recent MoU on Industrial Property Rights (IPR). This right provides a framework for cooperation in the field of patents, designs and trademarks.” The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the two sides discussed bilateral defense and security cooperation and expressed hope to further strengthen defense-industrial cooperation.

The Italian warship will visit India

The leaders welcomed the visit of Italian aircraft carrier ITS Cavour and training ship ITS Vespucci to India later this year. Prime Minister Modi thanked the Italian government for recognizing the Indian Army’s contribution to the Italian campaign during World War II and said India will upgrade the Yashwant Ghadge Memorial in Montone, Italy. The leaders noted the coordination under the ‘Global Biofuel Alliance’ and welcomed the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in Energy Transition, which will promote bilateral cooperation in clean and green energy, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement declaration.

He expressed his happiness over the new cooperation program for 2025-2027 to promote joint research and development in science and technology. Earlier on Friday, Meloni welcomed Prime Minister Modi. In addition, the leaders of Algeria, Argentina, Brazil, India, Jordan, Kenya, Mauritania, Tunisia, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) joined Pope Francis to address the session on Artificial Intelligence, Energy, Africa and the Mediterranean.
