“Second is certainly not bad” – Olav Kooij has to settle for another near miss during the Baloise Belgium Tour

Olav Kooij returns to racing for the first time since he left the 2024 Giro d’Italia due to illness and was close to victory in both first two sprints of the Baloise Belgium Tour, without yet being rewarded with a stage victory.

“It was a nervous final. We were in a good position, but because the last meters went downhill, we ended up in the so-called washing machine,” the Dutch sprint prodigy reflected in a reflection after stage 3 against the official Team Visma | Lease a Bike website. “In the sprint I had to make up a number of positions and in the end I did not get further than second place. That is certainly not bad, but let’s hope that we can continue the trend this weekend and take a victory in the final stage.”

After Tim Merlier took victory from the sprint on stage 2, with Kooij crossing the line in third, the Dutchman improved on stage 3 to finish second as Jasper Philipsen showed good pre-Tour de France form and claimed another victory added to his list of achievements.
