Major fire near Manipur Secretariat, close to Chief Minister’s house

Today, a significant fire broke out in a building near the high-security Secretariat complex in Manipur’s capital Imphal.

According to police reports, the affected building is just a few hundred meters from the official residence of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh.

Four fire engines were sent to the scene and successfully extinguished the fire this evening. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fire.

The building that caught fire is in the same complex as the headquarters of Kuki Inpi, a civil society group representing the Kuki tribes. This group has supported the call of another Kuki organization, the Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF), based in Churachandpur, to establish a “separate administration” within Manipur.

This incident comes less than a week after fresh violence broke out in Manipur’s Jiribam district, which borders Assam. The conflict involved clashes between the valley-dominant Meitei community and the hill-dominant Hmar tribes.
