Biden will offer migrants in the US legal status for ten years

The Biden administration plans to offer work permits and deportation protection to illegal immigrants who marry U.S. citizens, provided they have lived in the U.S. for at least 10 years.

The program, known as Parole in Place, would also pave the way to permanent legal status and U.S. citizenship for hundreds of thousands of migrants, CBS News reported.

It would undermine existing laws to remove barriers that prevent someone entering the U.S. illegally from obtaining a green card without leaving the country.

Another plan being pushed by President Biden would allow migrants to apply for waivers that would make it easier for them to obtain temporary visas, such as H-1B visas for highly skilled workers, sources told CBS News.

The measures could be announced as early as Tuesday, when White House officials will host an event to mark the 12th anniversary of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which protects 530,000 illegal immigrants who entered the country as children from deportation .

The country is expected to face major pushback from Republican lawmakers.
