5 highlights from the English route through Namibia | ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, 2024

Did you miss the late night clash between England and Namibia? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered!

Namibia makes a dream start with the ball

Bowlers are generally belted from ball one in rain-shortened matches, but Namibia made a near-perfect start with the ball, reducing England to 13/2 in 2.1 overs. David Wiese and Ruben Trumpelmann took advantage of the stickiness of the surface to get rid of the two in-form English openers.

Bairstow injects momentum into England’s innings

At 19/2 in 3.3 overs, England’s innings went nowhere. And then Bairstow hit a 4 & 6 against Bernard Scholtz to get the Three Lions innings underway. Bairstow eventually finished with 31 off 18 balls to achieve his highest ever individual score in the T20 World Cups.

Not a record to be proud of, but the big man stepped up on the day!

Harry Brook shows his class

Bairstow’s innings kicked off England’s surge, but it was Brook who propelled the Three Lions to a winning total. The right-hander is playing only his fourth T20 since December 2023 and has an unbeaten 47* off 20 balls in a Player of the Match performance.

Amazingly, 30 of Brooks’ 47 runs came against one bowler, Jack Brassell, against whom he had an SR of 300.0.

Moeen and Livingstone – small role, big impact

Together Moeen Ali and Liam Livingstone only faced ten balls. However, in those 10 balls, they hit four sixes and scored a total of 29 runs. Their cameos helped take England’s total to 122/5. Talk about ‘small role, big impact’.

126 proves too much for Namibia to chase

Chasing down a DLS-adapted 126 was always going to be a near-impossible task for a woefully out-of-form Namibian batting line-up. The top three showed some fight (van Lingen 33, Davin 18 & Wiese 27), but ultimately fell far short of the target and slumped to a 41-point victory. For England, Adil Rashid (0/29 from 2) surprisingly had a bad day.
