The Devil Wears Prada finally getting sequel

The Devil Wears Prada is reportedly returning for a sequel film, 18 years after the original.

According to Deadline, original screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna has been approached to write a script for a possible sequel to the 2006 movie, which the publication states is in “early development at Disney”.

David Frankel, who directed the original film, is also said to be “in talks to return” alongside original producer Wendy Finerman.

The Devil Wears Prada was an international box office success starring Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci. It is currently unknown if the cast will return for a follow-up film.

The 2006 movie follows Andie Sachs (Hathaway), who lands a role as a personal assistant to the notorious Miranda Priestly (Streep), the editor-in-chief of high fashion magazine Runway.

Fashion newbie Andie’s life is soon turned upside down as she’s put through her paces and introduced to the ruthless fashion world, guided along with help from colleagues Emily (Blunt) and Nigel (Tucci).

The original film is based on the bestselling 2003 book of the same name written by Lauren Weisberger, with speculation that the novel is semi-autobiographical never confirmed.

Weisberger wrote a sequel to her first novel, titled Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns, published in 2013. It’s unclear whether the follow-up film could be based on the book sequel.

Earlier this year, Hathaway shut down the idea of a Devil Wears Prada sequel, following her reunion with Streep and Blunt at the 2024 SAG awards.

“No, but maybe we could make something else,” she told E! News when asked about a possible sequel. “I don’t think a continuation of that story is probably ever going to happen.

“But I think we will continue to give out awards to other people,” she added, addressing the recent awards reunion. “So I think there’s a future for that.”

The Devil Wears Prada is enjoying a revival on stage this year, with a new musical coming to London’s West End.

The show will premiere on October 24, 2024 at the Dominion Theatre, with new songs for the show written by legendary musician Elton John. Tickets are on sale now via Ticketmaster.
