Pune: Hinjawadi police arrest truck driver after fatal accident claims journalist’s life

Hinjawadi, July 9, 2024: A journalist from Pimpri Chinchwad died in an accident when a truck ran over him on the Mumbai-Bengaluru highway. A case has been registered with the Hinjawadi police station and they have arrested the truck driver involved in the incident.

The accident happened on Sunday, July 7 at 9:45 pm in front of Decathlon in Wakad, on the Katraj-Dehu Road Bypass section of the Mumbai-Bengaluru Expressway.

The deceased journalist has been identified as Sharad Vasant Gaikwad, 41, a resident of Chinchwad. His sister filed a complaint at the Hinjawadi police station. The police have arrested Sadiq Ismail Basha, 43, a resident of Tamil Nadu, and registered a case under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 106(1) (causing death by negligence), 281 (reckless driving or riding on a public road), 125(B) (act endangering life or personal safety of others), and relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.

According to police reports, Sharad Gaikwad had gone to Tathawade to drop his sister home. While he was crossing the road in front of Decathlon on the Mumbai-Bengaluru highway, he was hit by a truck coming from the direction of Mumbai at high speed. Sharad Gaikwad died on the spot. On receiving information about the incident, officials from Hinjawadi and Wakad police stations rushed to the spot. The police have now arrested the truck driver. Since the area falls under the jurisdiction of Hinjawadi police, police inspector Dnyaneshwar Jhol of Hinjawadi police station is investigating the case further.
