Wimbledon 2024: Wet weather forces organisers to move mixed doubles final to Sunday

The Wimbledon mixed doubles final, originally scheduled for Thursday, will be played three days later, organizers said Tuesday. They adjusted the schedule because of persistent rain, which has caused a backlog on the outdoor courts at the All England Club.

Although the action continued under the roofs of Centre Court and Court One, several mixed doubles first-round matches were not completed due to wet weather during the first eight days of the Grand Slam on grass.

The mixed doubles final follows the men’s singles final on Sunday, while the men’s and women’s doubles finals follow the women’s singles final on Saturday.

“This gives us maximum flexibility to complete the championships on time and play all finals on Centre Court,” said tournament director Jamie Baker.

The number of visitors in the first week of the tournament also fell from 293,681 last year to 282,955, a drop of 3.7%. General manager Sally Bolton blamed the rain.

“The weather has been so terrible that the persistence in the queue this year is even greater than normal,” Bolton told reporters on Monday.

“We’re never about maximising our footfall, we’re primarily about protecting the queue and making sure we still have that accessibility, and accepting that there will be some variation in the numbers that we ultimately achieve. This year the weather has been so changeable and at times so bad that our assessment at this point is that it’s almost certainly the weather that’s having an impact.”
