3 people credited for rescuing man who crashed into Madera County canal

MADERA COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) — Officers are praising the Good Samaritans for saving the life of a driver who was trapped underwater after crashing into a canal in Madera County.

According to the California Highway Patrol, a 24-year-old man lost control of his Subaru Outback on Road 35 near Avenue 9 Sunday morning.

The SUV landed on its roof and was partially submerged, with the driver still inside the vehicle.

Two men entered the canal and helped the driver out of the vehicle.

An off-duty nurse also came by to provide medical assistance.

The driver was taken to hospital with serious injuries, but is expected to survive.

Authorities suspect the man was under the influence.

The CHP plans to nominate the three Good Samaritans for a citizen awards program.
