EV startups hail Uttar Pradesh government’s decision to waive road tax for hybrid cars

New Delhi, July 9, 2024
Electric vehicle (EV) startups on Tuesday hailed the Uttar Pradesh government’s announcement of complete exemption from registration tax on high-performance hybrid cars in a bid to promote the use of eco-friendly vehicles in the state.

The state offers a 100 percent exemption from registration fees for high-performance hybrid electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.

This measure is beneficial for hybrid cars from car manufacturers such as Maruti, Toyota and Honda.

Raghav Arora, co-founder and CTO of Statiq, told IANS that it is a significant step towards promoting eco-friendly cars.

“As an EV charging company, we welcome this initiative to make sustainable vehicles more accessible. This proactive government effort will encourage people to switch to EVs, which aligns with India’s broader goals of reducing carbon emissions and promoting the adoption of green technology,” Arora said.

As this is a change to the existing EV policy, the relaxation of registration fees will apply until October 2025.

According to Ankit Sharma, Co-Founder and Director of Vidyuta Materials, this is a startup focused on manufacturing cathode active materials (CAM) for lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles. They are supporting this initiative to make sustainable mobility more affordable.

“These actions will promote wider adoption of electric vehicles, reinforcing India’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions and embrace eco-friendly technologies,” Sharma added. (Agency)
