Police arrest man suspected of shooting two top crime fighters in Heidelberg

Gauteng police have arrested one person for the murder and attempted murder of two top crime fighters from Heidelberg.

The chairman of the Heidelberg Community Policing Forum (CPF), Flip Minnaar, was seriously injured, while his colleague Etienne du Preez was killed shortly after they attended a meeting on crime prevention at a local restaurant.

Police spokesman Lt. Col. Mavela Masondo said the suspect was arrested on Monday.

“The Gauteng Deputy Police Commissioner responsible for crime investigation, Major General Mbuso Khumalo, led the team to ensure that the suspect was tracked down and arrested,” he said.

The 30-year-old man is expected to appear in court in Heidelberg on Wednesday.

News24 previously reported that the attack took place on July 3, shortly after Minnaar and Du Preez met at a local restaurant on Ueckermann Street.

According to Willem Sprong, a representative of the Heidelberg CPF, they were waiting in an alley for a man on a motorcycle. As soon as they left the restaurant, he shot at both of them.

The men were rushed to a local hospital, where Du Preez was pronounced dead.

Sprong said Minnaar was still in the hospital.

“He’s recovering well, but it’s still a long road,” he said.

Minnaar and Du Preez were board members of the CPF.
