Delhi Police Arrests Truck Driver, Helper Who Stole Cashews Worth Rs 48 Lakh

Delhi Police managed to arrest two people who reportedly stole a truck full of cashew kernels that amounted to Rs 48 lakh. The law enforcement agency was approached by complainant Alok Bhatia, who is a resident of Delhi’s Ashok Vihar, on July 7. He told the police that he had booked a lorry truck to pick up to 6,000 kilograms of cashews that were stored in cartons of 20 kilograms each. He paid the lorry drivers Rs 450 for delivering a total of 295 1/2 cartons of cashews from Luthra Ice Plant at Lawrence Road in Keshav Puram to Badarpur.

When the truck, with the number plate DL 01 LAF 7764, failed to reach the destination, Alok Bhatia called the truck driver who did not pick up his phone. Once Alok Bhatia became suspicious that the cashews had been stolen, he lodged his complaint at the Keshav Puram police station.

The police first examined the complaint in detail to get as much information about the driver as possible. They then took the help of CCTV footage to get the identity of the accused. According to Hindustan Times, “During the investigation, all sources were activated.”

With a mix of surveillance footage and route tracking, law enforcement managed to nab the accused. They have been identified as 24-year-old Md. Sabir and 32-year-old Md. Faizan. Both of them are residents of Bihar. The police have registered a case against them under section 316(3) of Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS).

Delhi police claimed to have recovered all cashews from different parts of Delhi. They also found the truck used in the theft near the Adarsh Nagar metro station. Reportedly, the accused took off with the cashews in a bid to earn easy money.

Cashew kernels, which can be described as processed cashews, are obtained with several processes such as steaming or roasting. As per the Cashew Export Promotion Council Of India, “Cashew kernels are also available as roasted, salted, flavoured and coated with spices, honey, etc.”

Due to their high processing cost, the cashew kernels are expensive. They are graded into different categories based on the shape, size and colour of the kernel. The W – 180 grade cashew, also called the King of Cashew, is the most expensive kind of cashew nut. The W – 450 cashews, on the other hand, are the smallest and cheapest.
