Example:

  • Producer Brian Glazer says he’s working on a remake of ‘Backdraft.’
  • He mentions that Glen Powell will likely star in the project.
  • There are no other official details yet.

Glen Powell is, as the old saying goes, “so hot right now.” He cemented his stardom with films like “Anyone But You” and “Hit Man” and is back in theaters this weekend with “Twisters,” which has been getting rave reviews, like a tornado picking up cows and cars.

So you can imagine that he’s high on the list of collaboration partners for studios and production companies, and Brian Grazer is on that list.

The veteran producer, a business partner of Ron Howard who has brought many films and TV series to the screen, is now talking about returning to the territory he and Howard broke in 1991.

Backlash

“It waits silently behind a door. One breath of oxygen and it explodes in a deadly frenzy. In that moment it can create a hero…or hide a secret.”

And if he really does intend to do that, he’s apparently going to need A) a fire axe and B) Glen Powell. According to Grazer, he told CNBC’s business series Squawk Box as part of a wide-ranging interview about the future of Hollywood that he didn’t mention a possible “Backdraft” remake.

Here’s what Grazer had to say:

“Imagine (Entertainment) has always played in that zone where there’s a chance, a big chance of a chance, that it (a movie) will be successful in a theater. It’s great for us because in 30 years we’ve built over 100 different products –– brands. Whether it’s ‘Backdraft,’ which I’m doing now with Glen Powell, or 24, which is a movie we’re doing in a really interesting way with Disney-Fox.”

What is the story of ‘Backdraft’?

‘Backdraft’ –– directed by Howard from a script by Gregory Widen, follows Chicago firefighter brothers Stephen (Kurt Russell) and Brian (William Baldwin), who have been rivals since childhood.

Struggling to prove himself, Brian is transferred to the arson unit, where he assists Don (Robert De Niro) in his investigation into a series of fires involving oxygen-induced infernos called backdrafts. But when a conspiracy involving a corrupt politician and an arsonist leads Brian back to Stephen, he is forced to overcome his brotherly competitiveness to solve the case.

It was a huge success at the box office, grossing over $150 million worldwide (remember, in 1991), despite its budget of $40 million.

And as your anger over the remake grows, you may also remember—or, for most people, learn—that a sequel to the original was released in 2019. William Baldwin and Donald Sutherland were among the actors who returned for the direct-to-video effort that arrived with little heat.

What else did Grazer say about a possible new ‘Backdraft’?

According to the producer, we could see the fire effects –– which were already quite fantastic in the 1991 film and now practically brought to life –– in a modern guise:

“AI and digital effects have advanced to the point where you now have tiny cameras, almost unnoticeable, capturing the physics of a fire in a way that’s never been done before… Those are the developments and benefits of AI and digital effects.”

Will Glen Powell actually star?

Grazer isn’t one to spread wild rumors, so his mention of Powell’s name means that there were likely talks, even if there’s no deal. And since there’s no official word on any studio involvement (Universal owns the rights), it’s a matter of wait and see at this point.

Powell has already been linked to one or two remakes: he’s set to star in Edgar Wright’s version of “The Running Man” and has been mentioned as a possible lead for a new version of “Heaven Can Wait.”
