The southern part of the Pir Panjal range, which bisects the Jammu and Kashmir region, has seen a surge in terror activities over the past two years.

The Indian army has taken steps to ensure the country’s security, deploying more soldiers to the region, modernising its units and building a much stronger intelligence network for counter-terror operations.

Five army personnel were killed and another seriously injured when their vehicle caught fire following a terrorist attack on April 20, 2023 in Bhata Dhurian area of Poonch district.

On June 9, 2024, the Reasi terror attack took place when the terrorists ambushed a bus carrying pilgrims from Shiv Khori to Katra. The sudden attack turned the serene journey into a nightmare as gunfire erupted, causing the bus to veer off the road and plunge into a deep gorge.

Five soldiers, including a non-commissioned officer, were killed and as many injured when heavily armed terrorists ambushed a patrol group in the remote Machedi area of Kathua on July 8.

On July 18, two soldiers were injured in a gunfight with terrorists in a remote forest village in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district. Security forces had been searching the area for victims of a deadly terrorist attack that left four soldiers dead.

The attack was carried out by heavily armed terrorists from the Pakistan-based banned group Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM). The Kashmir Tigers, a shadow group of JeM, claimed responsibility for the attack, marking the third major terror incident in the Jammu region.
