Mason Greenwood ended his turbulent career at Man United on Thursday evening with a permanent move to French club Marseille.

Greenwood, who has not played for United for two-and-a-half years, has signed a five-year contract with Marseille in a deal worth £26.6million. The 22-year-old forward, who spent last season on loan at Spanish side Getafe, was suspended by United in January 2022 after being arrested by police.

Greenwood was charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behavior, and assault with intent to cause bodily harm. Ultimately, the prosecution decided to drop the case against him after key witnesses stopped cooperating.

United had planned to reinstate Greenwood into the first-team squad at the start of last season, but reversed the decision at the last minute amid fears of a public backlash. In a short statement, United wrote: “Mason Greenwood has left Manchester United and has joined French club Olympique de Marseille on a permanent basis.”
