Bas de Leede proud of his role as winner of the ICC award for the Netherlands

Earlier, the Netherlands had defeated the West Indians in the match of the tournament, with Logan van Beek hitting a record 30 runs in a Super Over, which proved to be a crucial victory.

When the team qualified for the main event along with Sri Lanka, it was confident it could compete with the best players in the world, De Leede said.

He said: “We knew what we had to do and the group believed we were capable of delivering some very good performances in a short space of time.

“There may have been some doubts, but belief was the most important thing. We tried to tell ourselves in the group that it was possible and then we started planning how we were going to do it.

“That West Indies match is number 1. It was 375 to chase and not get a single ball off the last ball but still win the Super Over like that, what Logan did that day was very special.

“After such a match against the West Indies it would have been nice if we had already qualified, but that was not the case.

“It was the same against Scotland, we knew what was needed. The net run-rate, batting second, was useful. To put in another performance, when it mattered, was special for us as a team. For me, it was one of the better days on a cricket field.”
