Global IT outage hits New Zealand banking, flights, transport and supermarkets

Problems are being reported with debit and credit cards from ASB, ANZ and Kiwibank, among others.

ANZ FastPay Tap and Visa payWave are also said to be unavailable.

The Herald has attempted to ask the Banking Association for comment.

ASB confirmed that several of its services were unavailable due to “an issue with a third-party supplier” that affected telecommunications and banking companies worldwide.

BNZ and Westpac told the Herald They did not experience any problems with their internet banking or payment systems.

Herald Readers reported problems at supermarket checkouts this evening and similar issues at other stores.

A man at Woolworths Hobsonville said there were long queues of people having problems at the checkout due to issues with the electronic cash register.

Newstalk ZB listeners are reporting that the outage is affecting customers at Mitre 10 and Bunnings in Hamilton, SBS Bank and Zero.

Someone texted NZME to report that Auckland Transport’s tag-on, tag-off terminals are also not working.

The Herald understands that Jetstar has been affected by the global IT outage.

a Herald According to a reader, Jetstar announced over the loudspeaker at Wellington Airport that it would delay flights due to the disruption.

Christchurch International Airport reports that flights may be disrupted due to IT issues.

Air New Zealand told the Herald There were no operational implications at this time.

According to Auckland Airport, all systems are functioning normally and there are no issues with check-in.

A police spokesperson said they, or Fire and Emergency NZ, had not received any reports of any issues with their services.

Acting Prime Minister David Seymour said officials were aware of a reported outage at Microsoft that was causing disruption worldwide.

“I have not received any reports at this time that indicate these issues are related to malicious cybersecurity activity. We are working hard to understand the potential impact of this, which is a global issue.”

He understood that the emergency services were not affected.

“We understand the inconvenience this is causing to the public, retailers and businesses. Officials from relevant government agencies are monitoring developments and will provide updates as organizations around the world work to resolve the issue.”

Television channels including Sky News Australia have also gone off air, with the Daily mail reporting that it had been hit by “an ongoing technical issue”.

There have been reports of Microsoft Windows computers crashing worldwide. Users reported that their computers displayed a blue screen (BSOD).

The Wall Street Journal posted on X that Microsoft was reporting a service outage for its Microsoft 365 apps and services, impacting businesses and users worldwide.

There have been reports of Windows computers displaying BSOD errors in several industries, including supermarkets, banks, and broadcasters.

Outage reports have been made online via the Downdetector website, indicating that there are issues with Microsoft 365 services.

The problem is said to be related to an update from cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike.

CrowdStrike said its “engineering teams are actively working to resolve this issue.”

Sky reported that CrowdStrike was offline.

“There was bloody chaos in the supermarket,” said one Herald the reader wrote on social media.

“The self-checkouts all started making mistakes and resetting themselves. By the time I got to the front of the line, there were only two or three that were still working.”

Another person wrote: “Curious about the reports of BSOD crashes with computer systems. I went to Chemist Warehouse and Woolies today and both had at least one computer system with a BSOD problem, with Chemist Warehouse getting stuck in a reboot and BSOD loop. Strange.”

A New Zealander who was on holiday in Fiji told the Herald He has been unable to access his money through ASB Bank for the past two hours and could not reach the bank for answers.

Another Herald Reader says Kiwibank cards and eftpos not working tonight.

Kiwibank indicated that it was aware of a problem with logging in to internet banking and the app.
