ICC monitors security situation in Bangladesh

New Delhi: The International Cricket Council (ICC) says it is closely monitoring the security situation in Bangladesh, which will host the Women’s T20 World Cup later this October.

Bangladesh police imposed a curfew and soldiers patrolled Dhaka on Saturday after violence escalated in the capital and elsewhere over protests by students demanding reforms to the quota system for government jobs.

“We have independent security monitoring all over the world. So yes, we are monitoring it (the situation in Bangladesh),” an ICC board member told PTI on condition of anonymity.

Australia is the most successful team at the Women’s T20 World Cup, having won the tournament a record six times in 2010, 2012, 2014, 2018, 2020 and 2023.

England and West Indies have each won the event once, while India, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, will be hoping for their first title.

India is currently playing in the Women’s Asia Cup in Dambulla, Sri Lanka. Tennis hurried Renuka Singh said the team is using the tournament as a preparation for the ICC highlight.

“The Asia Cup is important for us because we don’t have many games after that (ahead of the T20 World Cup) and we have to rely on training.

“So this is a learning experience for us, and the conditions (in Bangladesh) could be similar. So this is a good opportunity for us to prepare for the World Cup,” she said.
