Ohio’s Tax-Free Holiday Starts Soon, Here’s When You Can Start Saving

Ohio’s tax holiday is getting even longer this year, now lasting 10 days.

And it’s not just a chance to save on school supplies and kids’ clothes. Now, almost every sale can be tax-free for 10 days. So when does it start?

When is the tax holiday in Ohio?

This year’s sales tax holiday runs from midnight on July 30 through 11:59 p.m. on August 8. According to the Ohio Department of Taxation, the sales tax holiday applies to all tangible personal property (basically anything that can be touched, moved or consumed) costing $500 or less.

Well no everything. Watercraft and motor vehicles remain taxable. Cigarettes, tobacco and vaping products are also not eligible for a temporary tax reduction. Nor are items containing marijuana.

The new list does include restaurant food purchases. But there’s another big exception: Sales taxes still apply to beer, wine, cocktails and other alcoholic beverages.

Does the exemption also apply to online purchases?

It does! All qualifying items purchased online during the holiday season are tax exempt. The item does not need to be delivered during the holiday season; you just need to purchase it during the time frame.

On the other hand, items ordered before the holidays but delivered during the holidays are not exempt from tax. Shipping and handling charges are also exempt from tax during the holidays.
