Charlton Athletic have signed 27-year-old goalkeeper Sophie Whitehouse from Lewes, where she has played for the past two seasons.

She played at university in the US and then played for Bristol City, Birmingham City and Tottenham Hotspur before making 31 appearances for Lewes.

Whitehouse told charltonafc.com: “It’s really exciting, it’s nice to be in such a professional environment and get started.”

“I’ve worked with Karen (Hills) before and I really like their style of play. Charlton did really well last year and came really close to promotion, so I’m looking forward to this year and hopefully I can get close and get that extra point!”

“The Championship is obviously a very competitive league and a lot of teams are recruiting a lot of good players, so I’m excited about how competitive it’s going to be. Every game is so exciting and it’s going to be very interesting because so many teams are pushing for promotion.”
