Amid rain, search for missing persons continues in Uttara Kannada district

The search for the remaining three of the 10 persons missing after the landslide near Shirur village in Uttar Kannada district on Monday continued amid heavy rains and debris clearance efforts.

The search for the truck, whose GPS location was traced to the landslide site, continues, with new equipment and experts from Suratkal being deployed.

Minister for Fisheries, Ports and Inland Transport and Uttar Kannada District In-charge Mankal Vaidya, who visited the spot on Saturday, told media representatives that all efforts were being made to trace the remaining three persons. The rescue operation is likely to take another day or two to complete.

The minister said teams of the NDRF, SDRF, fire brigade personnel and other experts were involved in the relief operation and search was also underway in the adjacent Gangavali river.

Although the district administration had planned to deploy a helicopter for the search, this was delayed due to bad weather.

Uttar Kannada Deputy Commissioner Lakshmi Priya, ZP CEO Ishwarkumar Kandu, Police Chief Narayan and others were present.

Fishermen compensated

On Saturday, Mr. Vaidya also visited Uluvare village, where fishermen families were affected by the Shirur landslide. He gave compensation cheques of ₹14.75 lakh to 59 families of the fishermen (₹25,000 each).

The minister promised to help all of them and told them that the district administration had been instructed to find suitable land to build residential plots for the fishermen.

He said that while ₹25,000 per person had been given for carrying out repairs of fishing boats and nets, and other works, the government was considering giving additional compensation to the fishermen through the Fisheries Department. He was accompanied by Mr. Shail.

Rain damage

Meanwhile, due to the continuous rains, two houses in the district have been completely damaged (two badly damaged and 49 partially damaged). A total of 1,558 people have sought shelter in 28 shelters set up in the district.
