2 people flee scene of crash in Alton; police locate, arrest suspects

ALTON — Two people fled on foot Thursday from the scene of a crash at the intersection of E. Broadway and Homer Adams Parkway in Alton. The two occupants of a Honda Accord, which ended up 100 feet from the intersection, ran into the tree line near Meridocia Street, prompting a search by Alton police. The Accord had struck a Toyota Rav4, injuring the driver and sending him to a local hospital around 2 p.m. A large portion of the intersection was blocked, and the Honda nearly lost a front tire in the impact.

Police began searching for the man and woman who fled the scene and the woman quickly surrendered, but the man hid for about 10 minutes before finally giving up. Both individuals were injured in the crash.

Alton Police Chief Jarrett Ford said neighbors helped police locate the two people.

“Upon arrival at the jail, both individuals complained of minor injuries sustained in the traffic collision,” Ford said. “Both were released from jail and transported to local hospitals for treatment.”

Alton firefighters stood by with the damaged Rav4 until the patient could be transported. The Rav4 went into a median and knocked over a traffic sign. The intersection was cleared in about 30 minutes.
