Rangers 0 Man Utd 1 LIVE as the Premier League giants lead at the break

Philippe Clement is looking for tough tests as he ramps up his pre-season preparation – and they don’t come much bigger than Manchester United for Rangers.

Fresh from their tour of the Netherlands and facing off against Ajax, it’s another European big gun for the Light Blues as they gear up for a Scottish Premiership title challenge and crucial Champions League qualifiers.

It’s another chance for the new recruits to make their mark with the likes of Connor Barron, Jefte, Oscar Cortes, Clinton Nsiala and Liam Kelly all hoping to make a case for a starting spot when the first whistle blows on the competitive season.

But it won’t be easy with Erik ten Hag bringing some of his heavyweights to the capital. Jadon Sancho will be hoping to kickstart his Manchester United career while Leny Yoro could make his debut.

Five-time Champions League winner Casemiro also looks set to get game time alongside the likes of Mason Mount, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Andre Onana.

Rangers: Butland, Sterling, Souttar, Davies, Jefte, Barron, Diomande, Lawrence, Wright, Cortes, Dessers. Subs: Kelly, Budinauckas, Ridvan, Goldson, Matondo, Dowell, Balogun, King, McCausland, McKinnon, Lowry, Danilo.

Manchester United: Onana, Wan-Bissaka, Murray, Evans, Mount, Collyer, Wheatley, Yoro, Amad, Casemiro, Sancho. Subs: Mee, Vitek, Aljofree, Amass, Bennett, Fish, Jackson, Ogunneye, Hannibal, J. Fletcher, Mather, Oyedele, Scanlon, Ennis, Hugill.

But how will the Light Blues handle the pre-season test? Follow all the action LIVE as it happens.

Half-time: Rangers 0-1 Manchester United

Dujon Sterling and Jaden Sancho

It’s half-time at Murrayfield and it’s Man United who have a one-goal lead after a super strike from Amad Diallo – back to haunt his old side – and in truth United have been in command, even though Rangers have created some very decent chances.

Rangers 0-1 Manchester United

Sancho fires over

Again Amad Diallo is wreaking havoc as he cuts inside once more, this time finding Jadon Sancho just inside the box, but the winger fires over the bar.

That was a real chance, but it remains 1-0 United, with half-time approaching.

GOAL: Rangers 0-1 Man United

It’s a top finish from Amad Diallo, who cuts inside brilliantly from the touchline as Jefte slips and the winger drills his effort low across goal and into the corner.

Rangers 0-1 Man United, with 39 minutes on the clock.

Another chance

Rangers have another chance as Yoro’s ball across for Evans to run on to leads to a mix-up and Scott Wright picks it off, to feed Dessers.

His effort is blocked but it falls for Lawrence, whose effort is a more powerful one, but again straight at Onana.

Dessers drags down Mount

The Nigerian striker is fortunate not to get a booking after he drags down Mason Mount as United looked to break.

That’s a booking all day and maybe twice on Sunday in a competitive contest.

Chance on the break

United try the low ball to the edge of the penalty area, but it’s picked off by Dessers and deflects out for Cortes, who races forward looking for options, but he delays it just too much and the ball’s nicked off his toes.

United corner

Casemiro lines up an effort from outside the box, but it’s flicked behind by the head of Ben Davies.

Wright denied

Scott Wright has an effort on target, after being played in with a lovely pass. The winger lets the ball across him and then takes it early, but again it’s not troubling Onana.

Amad in the mood

Amad Diallo is definitely into his groove against former side and the former loan Ranger winds up a bicycle kick in the box, but the ball is cleared before he can connect.

Dessers on target

Rangers play the long ball down the right-hand side for Scott Wright, who pulls it down well and fires across for Dessers, who is in traffic, but does well to turn and shoot, but his effort is a tame one and not troubling Onana.

United free-kick

It’s another free-kick for United as Sancho is caught as he releases his pass, with referee Don Robertson deeming that no advantage was forthcoming.

The delivery is straight into the arms of Butland though and Rangers can clear.

Pressure is growing

United are playing keep-ball and eventually Collyer plays in Wan-Bissaka, with the ball being turned behind for another corner by Souttar.

The ball is cleared by United keep the ball.

Another corner

United are playing well right now and they do well to keep the ball ticking over before a deep ball to the back post is headed back across goal and then turned behind again for a corner.

This time it comes to nothing and Rangers can clear.

United corner

United work their way forward and look dangerous with an early cross which Souttar does well to turn behind.

United free-kick

It’s been a pitched battle down the United right between Amad and Jefte and the Ivorian winger wins his side a free-kick near the right corner of the box.

He takes it himself and his whipped effort whistles past the post, with Butland scrambling.

Still 0-0, with 23 minutes on the clock.

Wright clattered

Scott Wright gets a thwack as he goes up to head-flick on a throw-in from Man United full-back Murray and there’s a brief stoppage in play as he receives a bit of treatment.

United free-kick

United win a free-kick right on the touchline. The delivery is too close to Butland, but he elects to take no chances and tips it out for a corner.

Butland elects to punch the resulting corner away.

Massive chance

United work themselves a brilliant chance as Ethan Wheatley wins a brilliant flick-on for Amad and gets on his bike. The winger hits the byline at pace and pulls it back well for Wheatley, but his side-foot effort is blocked wide.

Big chance there, but still 0-0.

Free-kick Rangers

Amad is penalised for a foul on Jefte and Rangers take it short with Lawrence who lines up a strike from distance, but his effort sails over the bar.

Still 0-0, with nearly 17 minutes on the clock.

Cortes closing down

United have been pressing high up the pitch, but this time Oscar Cortes engages the press and cuts out Yoro’s pass for a throw-in.

Dessers denied by great tackle

It’s an intriguing contest between Leny Yoro and Dessers, and it’s the United man who wins this time as Lawrence attempts to play the striker in behind, but the French defender is alive to the danger and gets across well to turn it behind for a Rangers corner.

From the set-piece, United clear it well.

Just wide

From the resulting corner Casemiro heads the first real chance of the game just wide of the post, under pressure from the Rangers defence.

United corner

Leny Yoro sprays an excellent ball wide for Murray, with the ball eventually reaching Casemiro, who switches it wide for Amad, who takes on his man and wins the corner.

Dessers mis-control

Rangers win the ball back in the middle of the park and a neat one-two releases Diomande, who attempts to pick out Dessers, but the first touch lets him down and United re-take possession.

United settling in

It’s a good spell of neat passing from United as they keep hold of the ball in the middle of the pitch, before Casemiro attempts to send Wan-Bissaka down the line.

It’s out of play though and a throw-in to Rangers.

Diomande fires wide

It’s a wasteful one from the Rangers midfielder as his tame effort drifts wide.

Another free-kick for Rangers

Rangers Tom Lawrence is tackled by Man Utd’s Casemiro

It’s another free-kick for Rangers, this time just outside the box as Tom Lawrence is felled by Casemiro. The Rangers playmaker just got a toe on the ball ahead of the Brazilian who mistimed his tackle.

Free-kick Rangers

Rangers Cyriel Dessers and Man Utd’s Jonny Evans

It’s an early free-kick for Rangers as Jonny Evans is penalised for leading with the arm on Dessers.

Butland early nerves

Former United keeper Jack Butland has a bit of a shaky start as he sclaffs a clearance almost into the path of Mason Mount, but Rangers survive.

Kick-off

We’re under way at Murrayfield, as Rangers get the game going at the home of Scottish Rugby.

Final fluids

The players are on the sidelines taking on some final fluids as kick-off approaches.

Kick-off imminent

The players are staying out on the pitch and will be engaging in the pre-match pleasantries shortly, with kick-off still slated for 4:15pm.

Ruud reunion

Ruud van Nistelrooy is in the Manchester United dugout, having taken on a coaching role with the Red Devils. The former striker was in the top job at PSV when Rangers edged out the Eindhoven club en route to the Champions League Group Stages in 2022.

Rangers fans will be hoping for a similar Ruud awakening for United this afternoon. I’ll get my coat.

Warm-up resumed

The Man United players are back on the pitch to have some last minute drills to keep themselves warm, with kick-off delayed.

Kick-off delayed!

The Battle of Britain will have to wait!

Queues outside Murrayfield has led to a delay in kick-off!

Simpson: Big pre-season for Rangers

Former Man United and Leicester defender Danny Simpson has spoken about Rangers’ pivotal pre-season preparations, as well as his old team-mate James Tavernier, as they bid to wrestle the title back from Celtic and prevent their bitter rivals from matching their 55 league title wins.

Speaking to MUTV, when asked about the title situation – where the host compared the title totals fight to United’s 20 titles against Liverpool’s 19 – Premier League winner Simpson said:

Yeah, they will (be well aware Celtic are one away from matching), so that’s why this pre-season is just as important, because at the moment Celtic under Brendan Rodgers are playing really well, and they’ve just signed Kasper Schmeichel as well which will give them a chance.

It’s a big pre-season for Rangers, obviously one of my old team-mates, James Tavernier, is the captain. We’re not sure what’s going on with him as well, but it’s a big pre-season for them.

MUTV Host: Looking like Tavernier might be leaving, the captain, it’s a shame you’ve not been able to catch up with him while here, you could have had an inside scoop on that, couldn’t you?

I think he’s had 9 years at Rangers, listen, how many goals he’s scored, he’s been a fanstastic servant for the club and a shame I haven’t got to see him, but we’ll try later.

Dessers pre-match

Cyriel Dessers spoke to club media in the build-up to this 4pm kick-off and the Nigerian international striker is excited to be facing Premier League opponents this afternoon. Speaking to Rangers TV, Dessers said:

Excited, obviously. It’s fun to play in Scotland again, in front of a lot of our fans and it’s a beautiful opponent so hopefully we can show something today.

We’ve been working on a few things the last couple of weeks. We want to show that, and we want to show that we feel good, that we feel fit, that we feel confident and the circumstances are good, so everything’s there to show something.

The stadium is beautiful, when we drove here with the bus, I saw a lot of blue tops, so looking forward to see our fans after a few weeks off.

ten Hag pre-match

Erik ten Hag wants his players to take the opportunity to grab some much-needed minutes, while also being very excited to see new signing Leny Yoro in action. Speaking to MUTV, the Dutch manager said:

Yes, of course (it’s good to see more first-team players back), we need game practice for the match fitness, to build this up. It’s good to have Jadon (Sancho), Andre Onana his first minutes. We gave the chance to Radek (Vitek) and he did very well against Rosenborg, but of course Andre needs also the practice of the game.

I think that’s the right word, very exciting. For him, for us. We are so pleased we signed him (Leny Yoro). He’s a huge talent, and we’re really looking forward to work with him, to build him and you can see he’s a player straight, on the pitch yesterday in the training drills, so comfortable so we’re really excited about him.

Game face on

Rangers Connor Barron(Image: SNS Group)

Connor Barron looks to be relishing the prospect of playing against Premier League opposition this afternoon, with the game face firmly on if this snap is anything to go by.

Kick-off is just over half an hour away.

Managers meet

Man Utd Manager Erik ten Hag and Rangers Manager Philippe Clement(Image: SNS Group)

The two managers shook hands as their charges took to the field for warmups this afternoon as Philippe Clement and Erik ten Hag exchanged pleasantries on the Murrayfield touchline.

Torrential tussle

The weather’s turned a bit in Edinburgh, having been nice and sunny earlier, it’s now turned into a deluge and a downpour. Auld Reekie is looking pretty dreich at the moment.

Let’s hope it doesn’t dampen the atmosphere for those travelling fans.

Strong Rangers XI

It’s a strong XI that’s been put out by Philippe Clement to at least start this one, but expect plenty of bench activity too. Oscar Cortes starts alongside Scott Wright to form a pacy wing pairing, while Cyriel Dessers continues in the No. 9 role as Danilo continues his phased return from injury on the bench for this one.

Former United Academy graduate Tom Lawrence begins in the Rangers midfield alongside Connor Barron and Mo Diomande, while Ben Davies and John Souttar are the centre-half pairing to start.

Amad starts

(Image: PA)

It’s a reunion from the start for Man United winger Amad Diallo, who did win a Scottish Cup winners medal during his time at Ibrox, but didn’t quite manage to set the heather alight after scoring on his debut at Ross County.

Andre Onana returns between the sticks for United, as well as Jadon Sancho, while Leny Yoro starts after his £52m move.

Man United team to face Rangers

And here’s how Man United shape up for their trip north of the border.

Subs: Kelly, Budinauckas, Ridvan, Goldson, Matondo, Dowell, Balogun, King, McCausland, McKinnon, Lowry, Danilo.

Team Lines expected soon

We’re expecting the team lines from this one at any moment and we’ll bring you the up-to-the-minute team news as it drops.

In the footsteps of giants

It’s been revealed by Man United that new signing Leny Yoro will wear the No. 15 jersey once worn by bona fide United legend Nemanja Vidic.

If the Frenchman goes on to enjoy half the United career that the big Serbian defender had, then United fans will be in dreamland.

Fans streaming in

Manchester United fans arrive before the pre-season friendly match with Rangers(Image: PA)

With both sides enjoying terrific followings, it’s sure to be a festival of singing from the stands this afternoon, and the fans are beginning to stream in in their numbers to Murrayfield ahead of the 4pm kick-off.

Social Media Wars

Not to be outdone, the Rangers Socials team have also tweeted a look at the Murrayfield surface from pitchside.

Murrayfield in the sun

It’s an immaculate looking pitch the players will be strutting their stuff on today at Murrayfield, if this post from Man United’s socials team is anything to go by.

It’s a moderately nice-looking day in the capital as well for those travelling supporters coming from far and wide to support both sides.
