Jay Slater fundraising page reaches £70,000 after his mother appeals for donations for funeral

A fundraising page set up after Jay Slater disappeared has raised more than £10,000 after the teenager’s mother appealed for more donations to cover funeral costs.

With the total amount reaching £59,000 on Thursday, Debbie Duncan asked people to “continue to share and support our fundraiser in any way you can”.

“We want to give our boy the send-off he deserves,” she said in a statement on the GoFundMe page.

The page has now raised over £70,000.

The “Get Jay Slater Home” fundraiser was set up shortly after his disappearance to help cover the family’s travel and lodging expenses while they were on the island searching for him.

In her most recent statement, Mrs Duncan said the remaining funds and any future donations will be used to pay for the repatriation of her son’s body and burial.

Earlier this week, officials in Tenerife confirmed that rescuers had found a body near the village of Masca belonged to the 19-year-old.

They said the injuries he sustained indicated he had fallen from a rocky cliff.

How the search for missing teen captured the nation’s attention

On June 16, he attended a music festival in the southern resort of Playa de las Americas and got a lift to the Masca district.

When he spoke to his girlfriend Lucy Law the next morning, he told her he was lost, needed water and that his phone had only 1% battery left. He added that he planned to walk back to his holiday home in Los Cristianos, a journey of around 11 hours.

After it was confirmed the body was that of Mr Slater, Mrs Duncan said the family were “heartbroken” and she “can’t believe this could happen to my beautiful boy”.

Tributes have been left behind near the gorge where his body was found, where rescue teams searched for weeks.
