Cobra Kai Viewers express disappointment over Season 6: Part I

The sixth and final season of Cobra Kai starring William Zabka, Ralph Macchio, and more premiered on July 18, 2024 with Part 1 on Netflix, marking the first time a Netflix series has been split into three parts. Audiences who had been waiting for the final season seemed a bit disappointed with Part 1, as according to Paste Magazine, the storylines in the series have become familiar and repetitive. The publication also added that while Part I has a dull start, there is a possibility that it could set the stage for the upcoming installments in the final season.

The five episodes that premiered showed the children preparing for the Sekai Taikai, the world championship competition for karate. Fans quickly took to social media to discuss the event, with one Reddit user noting that the location of the Sekai Taikai in the episodes seemed smaller than the All-Valleys. Additionally, there was no audience, which came as a surprise to them as they expected the competition to be large-scale, with other countries competing.

One user responded to the comment by mentioning that he, like everyone else who loves the show, thought the creators would make the room bigger, adding that they hope future episodes don’t turn into cinematic failures like the season 4 tournaments. Another user responded to the comment by explaining that this could be due to the show’s budget, which is minuscule compared to what the creators wanted to achieve. They added,

You just have to accept that sometimes the show will bite you off more than you can chew.

Another avid fan of the show wondered how the streaming giant could raise hundreds of millions for Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon, but couldn’t finance one of the most popular series on its platform. But one thing fans did appreciate is the cliffhanger at the end of the fifth episode, which will continue in part 2 of the sixth season, which premieres in November 2024.

This isn’t the first time viewers have complained about the show’s poor cinematography. Similar thoughts were shared during S5, when one user noted that the show’s setting looked cheap and the lack of sunlight only added to the disappointing visuals.

S3 also received the same complaints from viewers, who pointed out that the show’s poor lighting made it look like their budget had been halved. They noted that it looked like everything was set up like a multi-camera sitcom, and pointed out that the flashbacks shown were more realistic and had an authentic look and feel, compared to the present-day scenes.

According to ScreenRant, the budget for one episode of Cobra Kai is around $2-3 million. The budget, which was relatively higher than the budget YouTube presented when the show premiered on YouTube Premium, allowed the creators to hire several stars from the Karate child franchise to star in the show.
