49ers, Chiefs to be Super Bowl 59 matchup, Pat McAfee believes – NBC Sports Bay Area & California

The 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs have faced off in two of the last five Super Bowls, and one expert says a third game is in the works to close out the 2024 NFL season.

ESPN’s Pat McAfee confidently picked San Francisco and Kansas City to represent their respective conferences in Super Bowl LIX during a recent episode of “The Pat McAfee Show.”

“I still think (the) Niners are clearly (phenomenal). The Niners are going to the Super Bowl,” McAfee said. “In my head, I saw Fred Warner flying around, and (Nick) Bosa going all the way back because he can’t hold up. You’ve got Bosa, (Warner) and (Talanoa Hufanga).”

“Chiefs-49ers is such an easy pick because we’ve seen them do it. That NFC side, I think there’s a little bit of dancing going on.”

With both the 49ers and Chiefs considered heavy favorites to reach Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans, McAfee’s pick comes as no surprise.

After winning the 2022 NFL Defensive Player of the Year award, Bosa got off to a slow start, missing much of San Francisco’s training camp and offseason program while negotiating a lucrative contract extension.

Now that Bosa has signed, the 49ers no longer have to worry about their defensive back being out of contract. However, similar issues could arise this year with wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk as the All-Pro weapon awaits a new deal.

Despite a heartbreaking overtime loss in Super Bowl LVIII, San Francisco still boasts one of the NFL’s best rosters, while Kansas City has arguably the sport’s most valuable player in quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

With Brock Purdy getting a full offseason as the starting quarterback for the first time in his NFL career, it’s reasonable to expect the 24-year-old to build on his strong 2023 campaign, which saw him in contention for the MVP race for much of the season.

After falling short to Kansas City in Super Bowl LIV and LVIII, the third time may be the charm for San Francisco if McAfee’s prediction comes true. The 49ers still want to win the Vince Lombardi Trophy, a prize they’ve eluded in nearly three decades.
