Truck checked at Woodlands Checkpoint found to contain 760kg of illegally imported products from Malaysia

A company was fined $8,800 on July 19 for illegally importing fresh and processed produce for sale. Ying Kah Trading’s managing director, Desmon Yong Wei Lun, was also fined $8,000 for failing to prevent the offence. The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) and the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) had conducted a joint operation on trucks entering Singapore at Woodlands Checkpoint in November 2023. During the operation, ICA officials referred a truck carrying food products to SFA for further checks after they discovered discrepancies in the shipment being transported for Ying Kah Trading.

SFA investigations revealed that the company illegally imported over 760kg of undeclared and underdeclared fresh and processed fruits and vegetables from Malaysia. The products included pineapple, sliced cabbage, bayam and peeled garlic. All illegal consignments were seized. Fruits and vegetables can only be imported into Singapore by authorised importers and each consignment must be declared and accompanied by a valid import permit. Offenders, upon conviction, face a maximum fine of $10,000 and/or imprisonment for up to three years.
