“Free Bachelor’s Degree for Students Studying and Working in Hotel in Eilat

The Municipality of Eilat and the Eilat Hotel Association have announced a package of benefits for students, including: free bachelor’s degrees at the Eilat branches of Ben-Gurion University, the Open University, the Levinsky-Wingate Academic Center and the Ono Academic College.

The “Eilat Relocation” benefits package, which is intended to reduce the cost of living for students studying in the city, is a result of the project that was launched last year being halted due to the outbreak of war at the beginning of the previous academic year. In addition, many students did not start the academic year at all and were unable to apply for scholarships or pursue their profession.

The benefits package includes full-time employment in the city’s hotels combined with a free bachelor’s degree, in addition to a package of benefits from the hotels, including: subsidized accommodation, better wages and subsidies, an Eilat Resident Card offering discounts and benefits in dozens of restaurants, shops and on Bishrair and Arkia domestic flights, meals, training and promotional programs, a 10% income tax benefit (subject to tax authority conditions), accommodation in the chain’s hotels at employee prices, fun days and parties, a preferential work option for those who qualify, and transportation from the residence to the hotel and back.

The program is intended for veterans and those who have completed their national service and are eligible for one of the Ministry of Defense scholarships. The students are registered as residents of the city of Eilat for the entire study period and participate in community activities in Eilat twice a year. The scholarship is financed by the Municipality of Eilat, the Eilat Hotel Association and the hotels in the city that are members of the association, in addition to the funding that is based on scholarships of the Ministry of Defense for students in the periphery in the first academic year.

Mayor of Eilat Eli Lankri: “This is a unique step that will encourage young people to live in Eilat, work in the hotel industry and take one of the dozens of courses we offer at various academic institutions in Eilat, alongside Eilat students, who will also receive a full scholarship. I thank the hotel association for their participation in this joint step, which will strengthen Eilat, make it easier for young students and improve their starting point in civic life.”

CEO of the Eilat Hotel Association, Itamar Elitzur: “The ‘Iron Swords’ war also affected Eilat. The city’s residents, the academic institutions, the students and the hotels all stood up for the evacuees, invested in their hospitality and made them feel at home. Eilat flourished again and was operating at 150%. The program we presented last year to provide a full scholarship to students who were supposed to come to the city to study and work in the hotels could not realize its full potential due to the recruitment of many candidates for extended periods of reserve, others who were evacuated from their homes and whose lives changed beyond recognition and more. Now we want them here with us and we give them another chance to ensure that they get their first degree with peace of mind from financial worries, in addition to a chance to build a career in the hotel and tourism industry, while providing a qualitative response to the labor shortage in hotels.”

Applications for the benefits package with a free bachelor’s degree are intended for students who come to work in one of the hotels that are members of the Eilat Hotels Association and at the same time are admitted to a bachelor’s degree program in the year 2015 at the following academic institutions: Ben-Gurion University of the Negev – Eilat Campus, the Open University – Eilat Campus, the Academic Center Levinsky – Wingate in Eilat and the Ono Academic College – Eilat Study Center (students at the Ono Academic College, a private institution, benefit from a subsidy equal to the tuition fee per year). Students will be admitted to the new benefits program on a first-come, first-served basis.

For the benefit of the students, the youth center in the municipality of Eilat has set up an information center that is staffed every day from 9:00 to 21:00. The young operators return to those registered on the website and guide them until they are fully accepted into the program, including choosing the field of study, the academic institution, the hotel and more.
