US: Newlywed Indian-origin man shot dead in front of wife in ‘road rage’ incident

A 29-year-old newlywed of Indian descent was shot dead in front of his wife in the US state of Indiana in an alleged road rage incident. The suspected shooter, who was initially arrested at the scene, was later released, suggesting he may have acted in “self-defense” as the victim was carrying a firearm when he confronted the other driver in a pickup truck.

According to police and media reports, the incident occurred last week on July 16 at an intersection in Indianapolis. Police said the victim, identified as Gavin Dasaur, was on his way home with his Mexican wife, Viviana ZaMora. The man was from Agra, Uttar Pradesh, and married ZaMora on June 29, a little over two weeks before his death, according to local WTHR reports.

Witnesses said a confrontation occurred between Dasaur, who was driving a black Honda, and a person driving a Chevy pickup truck. Cellphone video taken by another driver shows Dasaur angrily getting out of his car, then is seen yelling at the driver of the pickup truck, Fox news reported.

The video shows Dasaur carrying a gun in his right hand and, as he approaches the driver’s side of the pickup truck, he punches the door with the gun in his hand. He then shifts the gun to his left hand while simultaneously bringing his right hand to the window of the truck.

The driver of the pickup truck responds by firing three times and Dasaur immediately falls to the ground. The shooter never got out of his vehicle during the confrontation that lasted only seven seconds.

Indianapolis Police Department (IMPD) Officer Amanda Hibschman said officers responded to a report of a person shot at an intersection on the southeast side of Indy City just after 8 p.m. on July 16. Arriving officers said they found a man lying on the ground in the middle of the road with at least one gunshot wound.
