Man dies after entering River Trent near Victoria Embankment in Nottingham

A body has been recovered from the River Trent in Nottingham after reports a man had entered the water. Emergency services were called to Wilford Toll Bridge, on the Victoria Embankment, at around 2.15pm on Saturday, July 20.

After a lengthy search by officers from Nottinghamshire Police’s dive team, other policing teams and crews from Nottinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service, the body of a 44-year-old man was found.

An air ambulance also attended the scene after the call to police yesterday. Riverside Way, in the Meadows, was partially blocked in both directions leading to queuing traffic.

Inspector Dan Buckle, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “My thoughts are with this man’s family at this incredibly sad time. They are being supported by officers. Members of the emergency services who took part in the search yesterday should be commended for their professionalism. The death is not being treated as suspicious and a file is being prepared for the coroner.”

Members of the public were told to avoid the area. The fire service – made up of around five fire engines – left the scene at around 4.20pm.

A spokesperson for Nottinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service said: “Our thoughts are with the friends and family following this tragic incident. We would like to thank our emergency service partners who assisted with the search.”
