Kevin Feige Confirms DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE Will Usher In MCU’s ‘Mutant Era’

The Multiverse Saga hasn’t exactly gone according to plan. The emphasis on quantity over quality storytelling (thanks largely to a surge in TV shows on Disney+) didn’t pan out as well as Disney executives had hoped.

Returning CEO Bob Iger has acknowledged as much, taking the pressure off Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, ensuring he’s no longer overloaded and unable to properly oversee the MCU slate. Still, even with a change of direction, many fans are eager to move on to the next Saga.

Why? Well, the prevailing theory is that it’ll be the “Mutant Saga,” a new era of storytelling that largely revolves around a rebooted version of the X-Men franchise.

We were present at this weekend Deadpool and Wolverine global press conference and heard from Feige how this third film will usher in a new era of storytelling for the MCU.

“Every (MCU) movie is important, and there’s nothing better than a great movie for a Cinematic Universe,” he started. “The before and after? I think a lot of people are talking about the R rating and, ‘Is every (Marvel) movie after this one going to be R rated?’ Of course not. But I hope that every movie after this one embraces its tonality the way ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ and this team do.”

“Also, the ‘after’ is clear…now that we have characters from the ‘X-Men’ world, the Mutants, that we didn’t have access to before,” Feige added. “So this is the beginning of that, and every (film) after ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ will show the mutant era in the MCU.”

Some engagement-farming accounts on X have claimed that the Marvel Studios boss said the “Mutant Saga” is next, and while you could certainly read his comments that way, we’d argue he simply meant Deadpool and Wolverine is what opens the door for their appearance in the MCU.

Before we get into a full reboot, chances are we’ll see a lot of familiar mutants from the past (perhaps for a Avengers vs. X-Men film) for Avengers: Secret Wars close the door on the old X-Men Universe for the good.

“Well, it’s that expression we use a lot at Marvel: ‘It’s a source of abundance.’” Feige recently spoke about plans to eventually assemble a new team of X-Men. “And there are a lot of great X-Men characters in the Deadpool & Wolverine movie. There are a lot of great X-Men characters in all the Fox versions of the X-Men movies. And there are a lot of great X-Men characters that have never been on the big screen.”

“So I think you’ll probably see, as we always try to do, as we did when we made the deal with Sony for Spider-Man, a mix of characters you’ve seen before and characters you’ve never seen before,” he teased.

Marvel Studios has hired writer Michael Lesslie to pen the reboot. The X-Men could be mentioned at Comic-Con this weekend, but we don’t expect a release date or the inevitable slate of spinoffs to be announced just yet.
