  • The 2028 Jeep Gladiator will get a battery-electric powertrain and a range extender powertrain.
  • New design elements include advanced lighting and a redesigned seven-slot grille.
  • Production of the new Gladiator will start in early 2028 in Toledo, Ohio.

The 2028 Jeep Gladiator will join its Wrangler sibling in a controversial move to include battery-electric and range-extender (REx) powertrains. Recent documents from the United Auto Workers (UAW) agreement with Jeep parent company Stellantis inadvertently confirmed the move, which outlines the future of several U.S.-built models.

Four years may seem like an eternity in the automotive world, but that doesn’t stop us from already fantasizing about what Jeep’s next-generation Tacoma rival could look like.

Robust design

For 2028, the Gladiator EV (and the Wrangler on which it’s based) builds on the brand’s legendary heritage while incorporating modern design cues to broaden its appeal.

Expect a mix of classic Wrangler aesthetics with futuristic touches like aerodynamic enhancements and advanced lighting technology. Our design proposal includes a redesigned seven-slot grille, a Rivian-esque light bar and round Matrix LED headlamps alongside an angular lower bumper with improved approach angles. The pop-out windshield and hood latches have been removed for a cleaner look.

The side profile is even more radical, with a streamlined glass greenhouse, a two-tone roof (with two LiDAR units), a sculpted shoulder line and a longer bed with a sloping area behind the cab for better packaging. At the rear, a muted tailgate with full-width OLED taillights and stamped ‘Jeep’ lettering confirms the rugged look.

Stricter basic principles

The next Gladiator and J70-generation Wrangler are expected to ride on the ultra-strong STLA Frame platform, which promises improved structural rigidity and the ability to accommodate the heavy batteries required for long-range electric driving.

This architecture underpins the 2025 Ram 1500 REV, which is ideally suited to the Wrangler’s renowned off-road capabilities, ensuring the vehicle remains a formidable force on rugged terrain.

Enhanced aspirations

The current generation Jeep Gladiator

Jeep will reportedly offer two electric powertrain options: an all-electric variant and a range extender. The pure EV will likely feature a large battery pack (up to 229 kWh), with an estimated range of 350 to 500 miles (560 to 800 km) on a single charge. In terms of power, it could draw inspiration from the Magneto 3.0 concept, which makes an impressive 641 hp and 900 lb-ft of torque.

The Range Electric Paradigm Breaker (REPB) variant features a small combustion engine that acts as a generator to extend the vehicle’s range, offering a solution for long-distance travelers and off-road enthusiasts concerned about the availability of EV chargers.

Rivals and Reveal

The recently updated Rivian R1T

The Gladiator’s main rivals include Rivian’s R1T, the Fisker Alaska (if the company can stay afloat) and potentially certain versions of larger electric trucks, such as the Ford F-150 Lightning, Tesla Cybertruck and Chevrolet Silverado EV.

The official unveiling is expected in late 2027, with production at Stellantis’ Toledo, Ohio, facility set to begin in early 2028.
