Detroit Lions rookie surprisingly among four on injured list

The Detroit Lions made a total of four roster moves on Sunday, placing four players on the injured list. One of them, however, was a surprise.

According to the Lions’ official website, they have placed defensive back Brian Branch, edge rusher Marcus Davenport and defensive lineman DJ Reader on the list of players who are physically unable to play.

In addition, the team also placed rookie offensive tackle and fourth-round pick Giovanni Manu on the active/non-football injury list.

The additions of Branch, Reader and Davenport to the PUP list come as no surprise, as we know they have all been recovering from injuries. Branch is dealing with an ankle issue that he had surgery on earlier this offseason, Reader is coming back from a torn quadriceps from last year and Davenport is rehabbing an ankle injury.

Manu is a surprise, after all, he participated in the offseason program and there are no reports of him being injured or missing time.

So it appears his injury occurred sometime between the end of the off-season in June and the start of training camp, and as the name of the list suggests, it happened away from the team.

Anyway, Manu and the other three can be removed from the list at any time.

The Lions rookies begin training camp this week. Rookies reported on Saturday and veterans arrive on Tuesday. The first practice of training camp is scheduled for Wednesday.
