Extension of ITR filing deadline due to non-functioning of IT portal for FY 2023-24 | FY 2024-25

The All India Federation of Tax Practitioners (AIFTP) has requested India’s Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to extend the deadline for filing income tax returns in view of the non-operational income tax portal. He has also issued instructions to the agency responsible for maintaining the portal to fix the issues and ensure proper functioning of the site.

The Association Write That, “I hope you are feeling well and in a good mood as you read this letter. I am writing to inform you that the income tax e-filing portal has been unavailable for the past two weeks. This technical glitch has severely hampered the ability of taxpayers to file their income tax returns (ITRs) on time. I request you to issue the required instructions to the agency responsible for maintaining the portal to address these issues and ensure the portal functions effectively.”

Considering the critical significance of this situation, we request your respected office to consider extending the deadline for filing income tax returns for the current financial year. The current deadline of July 31, 2024 is fast approaching and the ongoing outage of the portal has deterred many taxpayers from filing their tax returns on time.

An extension would not only ease the burden on taxpayers, but would also ensure that tax rules are followed without unnecessary burdens. It would also help avoid excessive fees and interest for late filings.

We are confident that the seriousness of this situation will be understood and that immediate action will be taken to resolve it. It will sound beneficial if the consideration of our request is accepted and will be greatly appreciated by all taxpayers throughout the country.
