What You Need to Know Before Watching the Only MCU Movie in 2024

Deadpool & Wolverine is the only Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film set to be released in 2024. It will hit Malaysian cinemas on July 25, 2024.

The summary is:

Marvel Studios presents their biggest mistake yet: “Deadpool & Wolverine.” A listless Wade Wilson is toiling away at civilian life, his days as the morally flexible mercenary Deadpool behind him. When his homeworld is confronted with an existing threat, Wade must reluctantly don a suit with an even more reluctant… reluctant? reluctant? reluctant? reluctant. He must convince a reluctant Wolverine to: Fuck. Recaps are so fucking stupid.

We recently had the chance to sit in on a virtual press conference with the cast of the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine, including Ryan Reynolds (Wade Wilson/Deadpool), Hugh Jackman (Logan/Wolverine), and Shawn Levy (director). Check out what they had to say about Marvel Jesus and more.

Where and when is Deadpool & Wolverine set?

Okay, so the events of Deadpool & Wolverine take place after the events of Deadpool 2, as Wade Wilson continues his life after traveling back in time to save his family and friends.

Deadpool lives on another Earth in another universe, so it’s unclear when Deadpool & Wolverine will take place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). All we know is that Deadpool will end up in the MCU somehow.

However, the story takes place after the events of 2019’s Avengers Endgame and both seasons of the TV series Loki, as the story in Deadpool and Wolverine largely takes place around the Multiverse.

Who’s in Deadpool & Wolverine?

Of course, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman will reprise their roles as Wade Wilson/Deadpool and Logan/Wolverine, respectively.

That being said, other confirmed returning actors and characters include:

  • Aaron Stanford as Pyro from the 20th Century Fox X-Men films.
  • Tyler Mane as Sabretooth from the 20th Century Fox X-Men films.
  • Jennifer Garner as Elektra Natchios from Daredevil (2003) and Elektra (2005).
  • Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan from the MCU.
  • Morena Baccarin as Vanessa Carlysle from the previous two Deadpool films.
  • Rob Delaney as Peter Wisdom from the two previous Deadpool films.
  • Leslie Uggams as Blind Al from the two previous Deadpool films.
  • Karan Soni as Dopinder from the previous two Deadpool films.
  • Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead from the two previous Deadpool films.
  • Stefan Kapicic as the voice of Colossus from the previous two Deadpool films.
  • Shioli Kutsuna as Yukio from the previous two Deadpool films.
  • Lewis Tan as Shatterstar from the previous two Deadpool films.
  • Dafne Keen as Laura Kinney, also known as X-23 from Logan.

New characters include:

Emma Corrin as Cassandra Nova

A mutant with telekinetic and telepathic powers, who is the twin sister of Charles Xavier, also known as Professor X. She will be one of the main antagonists in Deadpool & Wolverine.

In the comics, Cassandra is a “mummudrai,” a parasitic life form born on the astral plane without a body. The mummudrai that Cassandra became telepathically entwined with the future Charles Xavier, who possesses vast mutant telepathic powers. This gave Cassandra some psionic powers of her own, including the ability to leave the womb and create a body.

Cassandra is Xavier’s ideological dark shadow, bent on destruction and genocide. She is most infamous for leading an army of Sentinels to slaughter 16 million mutants in the mutant homeland of Genosha.

Matthew Macfadyen as Mr. Paradox

A Time Variance Authority (TVA) agent whose purpose and intentions are as yet unknown.

In the comics, Paradox started out as a doppelganger created by Doctor Strange to act as his proxy, and his name was simply Strange. After refusing to be destroyed by Doctor Strange, he merged with another being from the Dark Dimension named Nobel and became Paradox. Paradox then befriended Clea Strange and remained in the Dark Dimension.

However, the Paradox in Deadpool & Wolverine appears to be an entirely different character, only sharing the same name as Paradox. Paradox in Deadpool & Wolverine is a variation of Mobius M. Mobius, whose name is also Mr. Paradox or Agent Paradox.

What to Watch Before Deadpool & Wolverine

Technically, Deadpool & Wolverine is intended to be a standalone film of sorts, as it will mark Deadpool’s official debut in the MCU. However, if you have the time and resources to watch multiple movies in preparation for Deadpool & Wolverine, here’s how you can prepare by watching these movies and TV shows (all of which are available right now on Disney+ Hotstar).

Deadpool from 2016

This movie is the live-action introduction of Wade Wilson aka Deadpool. Well, the REAL introduction, so let’s forget about 2009’s X-Men Origins Wolverine. If you only have the time and energy to watch one movie for Deadpool & Wolverine, this should be it, because it’s his origin movie, so an origin movie is basically the foundation of what makes that particular superhero.

Deadpool 2 from 2018

It is the sequel to 2016’s Deadpool and it is the last point where we left Deadpool, which then directly leads into the events of Deadpool & Wolverine. Deadpool’s time travel shenanigans during the post-credits scene in this film will tie into what happens in Deadpool & Wolverine.

Logan from 2017

This is the last Wolverine movie so far, and if you understand what happens in Logan, you’ll better understand why everything happens in Deadpool and Wolverine.

Loki Season 1 And Loki Season 2

This one is more of a time waster, since there are two whole seasons of the show to watch, but the multiverse stuff going on in Deadpool & Wolverine is connected to the Loki TV series due to the appearance of the Time Variance Authority (TVA) in Deadpool & Wolverine.
