Defending champions Inter Miami, without injured star player Lionel Messi, beat Mexican side Puebla 2-0 at home on Saturday to begin their defence of their Leagues Cup title.

Paraguay’s Matias Rojas opened the scoring in the ninth minute and Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez scored a convincing goal in the 72nd minute to give Inter Miami the victory.

Miami were without Argentine striker Messi, who is still recovering from a left ankle injury suffered two weeks ago during Argentina’s win over Colombia in the Copa America final.

Messi, who led Miami to the Leagues Cup title shortly after arriving last year, missed two MLS season games for Inter Miami and the MLS All-Star Game three nights ago.

The Leagues Cup sends MLS clubs and Mexican Liga MX teams to a World Cup-style tournament featuring groups of three teams, with two clubs advancing to the knockout stage.

Miami will play the other group match next Saturday against Mexican side Tigres.

In Saturday’s other group openers, Mexico’s Atlas defeated Houston 1-0, New England defeated Mazatlan 1-0, Philadelphia beat Charlotte 1-0 and Toronto defeated the New York Bulls 5-4 on penalties after the match ended in a scoreless draw.

American midfielder Jack Panayotou scored in the 69th minute to give New England the win, while Israeli striker Tai Baribo scored in the 33rd minute to give Philadelphia the win. Mexican defender Jose Lozano scored the winning goal for Atlas in the 83rd minute.
