Job description

The Registrar plays a crucial role in the Senior Management structure of the University, providing overall leadership and management functions. As Chief Administrator of the University, the Registrar is responsible for planning, organising and directing the overall governance of the University in accordance with the Women’s University in Africa Charter (Statutory Instrument 130 of 2004), the Transformational Strategy and policies and procedures approved by the University Council. The successful candidate must have demonstrable change management skills, communication and interpersonal skills and a commitment to the administrative demands of the institution.

The successful candidate will be appointed on a temporary basis for a period of four (4) years, renewable based on performance. He will report directly to the Vice-Chancellor.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serves in an advisory capacity on the full range of University activities to the Vice-Chancellor, the President of the Council, the Senate, the Chairs of University Committees and other senior officials.
  • Provides guidance and advice on matters such as business ethics, good corporate governance and interpretation of the statutes and by-laws of the Women’s University in Africa to all stakeholders of the university.
  • Serves as secretary to the University Council and the Executive Board and oversees the general organization of the Council’s activities.
  • Provides secretarial services to the Management Committee, the Senate and its committees;
  • Ensures the effective operation and management of the Academic Registry, Human Resources and Administration, Legal Affairs and Records Management departments by establishing policies and managing their implementation.
  • Develops, formulates and implements the university’s policies, rules and regulations at various levels to achieve the university’s vision, mission and strategic objectives.
  • Serves as guardian of university policy and regulations.
  • Ensures the preparation of quarterly and annual reports on operational performance.
  • Oversees functions related to student registration, admissions, examination administration, and general academic affairs of the university.
  • Responsible for the overall health of the university’s business climate and brand image;
  • Certifies diplomas and academic transcripts.
  • Performs such other duties and functions of the University as may be assigned by the Vice-Chancellor.

Qualifications and experience

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Administration, Management or an equivalent degree from an accredited institution of higher education.
  • A Master’s degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Management or an equivalent degree from an accredited institution of higher education.
  • A PhD in business administration, public administration, management or an equivalent degree is an advantage.
  • Relevant practical experience with information and communication technologies (ICT) and their application in administrative and management systems.
  • At least ten (10) years of relevant work experience, preferably in a university environment, of which five (5) years at a senior administrative level.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with various stakeholders within and outside the university.
  • Demonstrated ability to write reports and minutes of meetings at the highest level.
  • Be motivated, proactive and innovative and have demonstrable leadership skills.
  • High degree of professional integrity and commitment to confidentiality.
  • Ability to connect with external stakeholders to meet the emerging needs of the University, command respect, and build cooperation and loyalty among University staff and students.
  • A high degree of dedication to the task and self-motivated to work under pressure; and
  • Open-minded, forward-looking, team builder, innovative and always looking for ways to add value to the Women’s University in Africa brand.
