Aruna and Omotayo eliminated in men’s singles table tennis

Nigeria’s ambitions to perform well in the men’s table tennis event at the Paris Olympics have been dashed.

On Saturday night, Aruna Quadri and Nigerian duo Olajide Omotayo suffered disappointing first round losses.

Aruna, who reached the quarter-finals in Rio 2016, was surprised by 20-year-old Eduard Ionescu from Romania in a thrilling match at the South Paris Arena.

Despite leading 3-0, Aruna lost 3-4 in a thrilling match.

Ionescu, who made his Olympic debut, made an impressive comeback after losing the first three games (11-8, 11-9, 11-6).

He won the next four games (11-8, 12-10, 11-9, 13-11) to secure a place in the round of 16.

Meanwhile, Omotayo suffered a 1-4 defeat to Iran’s Noshad Alamiyan, which dealt a major blow to Team Nigeria’s morale.

There was a brief glimmer of hope for Omotayo in the fourth set, as he made up for the setbacks of the previous two sets. But it wasn’t enough. Alamiyan fought on and won the set 10-12. In the final set, he decided the match 8-11.
