Discovery Day in Silver Park on Tuesday

ALLIANCE – Stark Parks is hosting Discovery Day at Silver Park, 2930 S. Union Ave., from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. In partnership with Alliance City Parks, Discovery Day is filled with free outdoor family fun, including kayaks, live animals and hoverball archery. All activities are weather dependent.

For kayaks, a declaration is required that must be signed on site. Participants under 18 must have a declaration signed by a legal guardian. The minimum age for solo kayaking is 10. For tandem kayaking, the maximum is two people and one paddler must be at least 16 years old. Adults (18 years or older) must accompany children under 8 years old.

Book sale Saturday until August 7

ALLIANCE – The annual Friends of Rodman Public Library Used Book Sale will be held Saturday through August 7 at Alliance Commons, 405 S. Linden Ave. The location is at High Street and Linden Avenue. Sale attendees are asked to enter through the Linden Avenue side of the building. Signs will be posted throughout the area to assist buyers.

There are over 10,000 items for sale, including books, paperbacks, DVDs, CDs, vinyl records, magazines, and a selection of puzzles and board games. A wide variety of children’s books are available, as well as a selection of collectible books, a list of which can be found at rodmanlibrary.com/collectibles.

Saturday’s sale is for Friends of Rodman Public Library members only. Memberships are available at the door for $5 for those 15 and older. A patron membership is also available for $25.

The sale will run from 1-5pm on Sunday and from 9am-8pm on August 5-7. On Tuesday only, visitors who make a purchase will receive a raffle ticket to win a chair and ottoman donated by Grove Appliance. On the final day, shoppers can pay for the sale all day long by donation. Cash, checks and credit cards are accepted; a 4% processing fee applies to all cards.

Several baskets will be raffled off, as well as two quilts and a raffle board. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5. New to the sale this year are Christmas gift tags for $1 a pack to pair with Christmas greeting cards, which come in a pack of 20 for $2. A pack of 20 cards with envelopes is also available for $3.

Children’s films Monday, Wednesday

CANTON – The Summer Kids Movie Series continues Monday at 1 p.m. at the Canton Palace Theatre, 605 Market Ave. N, with a showing of “Zootopia.” Admission is $2. Doors and box office open at noon. A sensory-friendly screening of the film is at 6:30 p.m.

The Centennial Plaza Movie Series continues Wednesday at 7 p.m. with an outdoor screening of “Rudy” at Centennial Plaza, 330 Court Ave. NW. Admission is free. The film will be shown rain or shine. In the event of inclement weather, the film will be canceled. The Centennial Plaza Movie Series will screen family-friendly films every Wednesday at 7 p.m. through August 14.

Jackson Amphitheater to host concerts, children’s film

JACKSON TWP. – Boaterhead will perform a free concert at the Nash Family Jackson Amphitheater, 7454 Community Parkway NW, at 7 p.m. on August 8. Gates open at 5:30 p.m.

Jump: A Tribute to the Music of Van Halen will be performed on August 9 at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m. For tickets and information, visit jacksonamphitheater.com.

“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” will be shown on August 10 at 6 p.m. Admission is free. Outside food and drinks are allowed. Food trucks will be available. Bring blankets or chairs to sit on the lawn; there will be no seating available. No alcoholic beverages are allowed. This is the last movie in the amphitheater for the year.

Jackson student at American Legion Auxiliary Girls Nation

JACKSON TWP. – Nagaisha Nagajothi, a senior at Jackson High School, was one of 100 seniors selected to participate in the American Legion Auxiliary Girls Nation from July 20 to 27 in Washington, D.C. The week-long program teaches them about how the federal government works.

Nagajothi was one of two contestants who represented Ohio as a “senator.” Two delegates from each Girls State program are chosen to represent their state after participating in a state-level American Legion Auxiliary program held across the country. In Girls Nation, senators participate in mock Senate sessions, complete with caucuses and debates on bills ranging from personal to political concerns.

Writers group meets

JACKSON TWP. – The Canton Write Stuff Authors Group is now meeting at the Jackson Community Branch of the Stark County Library, 7487 Fulton Drive NW.

Meetings for the remainder of the year are at 6:00 p.m. on August 8, September 12, October 10, and November 7. Meetings are open to local authors, aspiring authors, and writers. For more information, email [email protected].

Donate school supplies

JACKSON TWP. – Jackson Bear Hugs is hosting a school supply drive. Drop off donations at the following locations: Rezist Ohio, Paper Twigs, Quaker Steak, Buehler’s Fresh Foods, Jackson Community Branch Library, Ohio Roasting, Baker Dublikar, St. Stephen Martyr Church, Fizzlestix, Paul and Carol David YMCA, and East Coast Karate.

A Stuff the Bus event will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Buehler’s, 7138 Fulton Drive. Suggested donations include crayons, scissors, pencils, folders, backpacks, glue sticks, notebooks, water bottles, colored pencils, pens, lunch boxes, watercolors, highlighters, art boxes, markers, binders and loose-leaf paper.

A back-to-school supplies party will be held from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on August 6 at Jackson High School. Everyone is welcome to this free family event.

Free concerts at Duncan Plaza

MASSILLON – The Tyler Reid Band will perform Thursday and the Canal Fulton Community Band will perform Aug. 5 as part of the free Summer Concert Series at Duncan Plaza, 121 Lincoln Way E. Both concerts begin at 7 p.m. Bring a chair or blanket to sit on.

Teen Escape Room at Massillon Library

Bubble show Thursday in Minerva

MINERVA – The Minerva Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting Circus Pop! The Giant Bubble Show, featuring Logan Jimenez on Thursday at the Minerva Community Building. Shows are at 5:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

The hour-long shows combine bubble art, magic, circus skills and comedy. Jimenez transforms ordinary bubbles into a bubble volcano that bursts bubbles, places six people in one bubble and creates a bubble snowman that flies over the audience.

‘Anastasia the Musical’ in North Canton

Series of lectures by authors from the North Canton Library

NORTH CANTON − Each month, the North Canton Public Library hosts a livestream of author readings featuring bestselling, award-winning, and acclaimed fiction and nonfiction authors from around the world.

Fairless organizes back-to-school event

SUGAR CREEK TWP. − Fairless Local Schools will host a Back to the Nest Community Night on August 8 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at Brideweser Stadium, 11885 Navarre Road SW.

Homeroom lists and bus routes will be posted. The event will include bounce houses, obstacle courses, fire trucks, book bus, ice cream and Kona Ice. A meet-the-teams event and pep rally will be held at 5:00 p.m.
