Athletes will be competing for gold over the next two weeks, but on Friday it was a different kind of metal that stole the show.

In between the show tunes of “Les Miserables” and “Carmen,” French heavy metal band Gojira performed a head-banging performance at the Olympic Games opening ceremony, giving viewers a bit of a culture shock.

Gojira was first greeted by a beheaded Marie Antoinette and performed at the Conciergerie along the Seine.

You need to know this.

Gojira consists of Joe Duplantier, Mario Duplantier, Christian Andreu and Jean-Michel La-badie. They performed at the Conciergerie, the residence of the French kings in the Middle Ages.

It became a prison during the French Revolution, and Marie Antoinette was one of its most famous prisoners. Gojira performed with singer Marina Viotti.

The band’s name is inspired by the legendary kaiju Godzilla, and they were originally called Godzilla until 2001. They have been nominated for a Grammy Award three times and recently released their album “Fortitude” in 2021.

Gojira plays metal and various subgenres, including progressive metal and groove metal.

Marie Antoinette may have lost her head, but if she still had one, she’d be getting it in 2024 thanks to Gojira.
