Bangladesh confident of hosting Women’s T20 World Cup in 2024 despite political unrest

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) said it is confident of hosting the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup “as per plan” despite the ongoing political unrest and emergency situation in the country.

Earlier, the International Cricket Council said it was closely monitoring the situation in Bangladesh. The government had to declare a state of emergency last week, which has not yet been lifted, to get the state under control after the killings and protests on the streets.

The Women’s T20 World Cup is scheduled to be held from October 3 to 20. Ten teams will play 23 matches over 18 days at two venues in Bangladesh: the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka and the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium in Sylhet.

“All I know so far is that we are hosting the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup as planned and we are working accordingly,” BCB CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury told Cricbuzz on Saturday.

BCB Chairman Nazmul Hasan and the CEO returned to Dhaka on Friday (July 26) after attending the ICC meeting in Colombo.

Shafiul Alam Chowdhury Nadel, president of the BCB women’s wing and current Member of Parliament for the ruling party, stated that there is no need to panic as they have ample time to successfully host the tournament.

“We hope that everything will be fine in the coming days,” Shafiul told this website when his attention was drawn to the issue.

“The Australians and the England team visited us before in difficult times, when the political situation was quite violent or when there was corona,” he said.

“The situation is not like that and the conditions are improving as the days go by. We are hopeful that we can host the tournament and we are preparing as planned,” he said.
