Restaurant at Hoboken train station to close, partly due to rent arrears

A cafe near the Hoboken train station has announced that today (Sunday, July 28) will be its last day, but it will reopen in Jersey City.

HOBOKEN, NJ — If you’re looking to bid farewell to the downtown Hoboken location of Hidden Grounds Coffee and Chai, a small New Jersey-based chain, you’ll want to act quickly.

While the coffeehouse group will retain its Garden Street location, they are leaving their other Hoboken location at 79 Hudson St., one block from the Hoboken train station, they announced early on Sunday, July 28.

The location offered coffee, tea, sandwiches, pastries and a place to sit and work.

They wrote in a post: “We could talk about how our move comes after dealing with a rent increase, outgrowing our space, dealing with an outdated electrical panel, and a $40,000 bill to fix the air conditioning. BUT the best part about running a business is that neither sadness nor happiness lasts forever; one always follows the other, sometimes within hours. And hey, we certainly won’t miss that broken air conditioner!

“We will miss the charm and scents of this space, but not our staff: they are leaving with us. We hope you will visit us at our store at 700 Garden St. in Hoboken and stay tuned for our third location in Jersey City.”

The chain started in New Brunswick, near the Rutgers campus, and has since opened in Brooklyn and elsewhere. The owner has gotten some publicity over the years for being nice to someone who broke into one of the Hoboken stores, and for being open about his business.
