See when Cincinnati athletes compete at the 2024 Paris Olympics

Four Cincinnati residents are far from home this month as they compete in the 2024 Olympic Games.

The Olympics began Friday with a torch ceremony and performances celebrating French and Parisian culture. Among the 592 athletes on the U.S. Olympic team are four local athletes: Rose Lavelle, Nina Castagna, Carson Foster and Max Holt.

Now, these four Cincinnati natives join hundreds of other world-class athletes to bring glory to the USA – and maybe even bring a medal or two to the Queen City.

Here you can see the four athletes competing.

Rose Lavelle, women’s football

Rose Lavelle, a Mount Notre Dame High School alumnus and Cincinnati native, is competing in her second Olympics this year. The 29-year-old and her team won a bronze medal at the 2021 Tokyo Games. She scored one goal at the last Olympics and is one of eight returning players on the Tokyo team.

Lavelle was in the starting lineup for the U.S. women’s national team’s 3-0 win over Zambia on Thursday before being replaced at halftime by Korbin Albert.

Lavelle and the women’s team will return to the field on Sunday at 3pm to play Germany and on Wednesday at 1pm to play Australia.

Nina Castagna, women’s rowing

Nina Castagna, a Cincinnati native and graduate of Walnut Hills High School and the University of Washington, won gold for the U.S. at every Olympic Games in women’s rowing from 2004 to 2016. This year, she is competing as a coxswain in the women’s coxed eight.

The qualifying matches for the women’s eights will take place on Monday at 6am.

Carson Foster, Men’s Swimming and Diving

Carson Foster is a product of Sycamore High School and the Mason Manta Rays swimming club. The University of Texas alumnus will compete in the 200-meter individual medley (IM) and 400-meter individual medley. Those events have earned him multiple silver and gold medals in world championships since 2021.

Foster won his preliminary round early Sunday morning and qualified for the 400-meter medley final, which starts at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.

The heats for the 200m IM will take place at 5:40am on Thursday morning, with semi-finals at 3:35pm later that day. The finals will be held at 2:43pm on Friday.

Max Holt, men’s volleyball

Max Holt, who played volleyball for Purcell Marian High School and Penn State, was a reserve player in the 2012 London Olympics and was on the active roster for 2016 Rio de Janeiro and 2021 Tokyo. The 6-foot-10 middle blocker and Team USA won a bronze medal in Rio.

The US men’s volleyball team will face Germany in the preliminary round on Tuesday at 7:00 a.m.
