India seal T20I series against Sri Lanka with match in hand to begin Gautam Gambhir era – News18

Team India wrapped up the three-match T20I series in Sri Lanka with one match in hand by registering their second win in two days over the home side at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Sunday.

India restricted Sri Lanka to 161 runs, losing 9 wickets in 20 overs, before successfully reaching the revised target of 78 runs, winning by 8 runs after rain interrupted the second innings.

Suryakumar Yadav opted to field first after winning the toss, which was postponed for 45 minutes due to bad weather. The decision paid off quickly, as Arshdeep Singh made the first breakthrough in the fourth over of the powerplay with the scalp of Kusal Mendis.

Kusal Perera and Pathum Nissanka stabilised the Lankan innings with a 54-run stand before the latter fell victim to Ravi Bishnoi after scoring 32 off 24 deliveries. Perera shared another 50-run stand with Kamindu Mendis before Hardik Pandya dismissed Mendis for 26 off 23.

Dasun Shanaka went for a golden duck when Bishnoi castled the Sri Lankan before hitting wood again to remove Wanindu Hasaranga for another first-ball duck and complete his three-wicket haul.

The collapse in the middle order continued when captain Charith Asalanka was dismissed by Arshdeep for 14 off 12, before Axar Patel dismissed Maheesh Theekshana and Ramesh Mendis in the last over to restrict the home team to a paltry 161 runs.

India opened the chase with Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sanju Samson, who replaced Shubman Gill on the day, and raced to six runs from the first three balls thanks to a boundary through the covers by the left-hander before the players had to return to the hut as the night sky opened up.

India were given a revised target of 78 to win in 8 overs, via the DL method, and Jaiswal came out to swing his willow and grab some quick runs. Samson, however, was unlucky and was dismissed for a golden duck by spinner Maheesh Theekshana.

Suryakumar Yadav came in to bat and picked up where he left off yesterday and kept the scoreboard ticking with boundaries. The skipper seemed to be handling boundaries and took his team past the 50-run mark in 4.1 overs before being dismissed by Matheesha Pathirana for 26 off 12 deliveries.

Jaiswal helped the visitors reach the target with a maximum score but left the goal after being scalped by Hasaranga.

Hardik Pandya took the pressure off with a six in the sixth over, giving India the lead they needed to wrap up the match without any trouble.
