Teen killed, Calgary residents injured in crash on Highway 22 north of Cochrane

Motorists are advised to drive with caution on Highway 22 as police continue to investigate and delays may occur due to road closures.

ROCKY VIEW PROVINCE – A 19-year-old was killed Saturday in a crash on Highway 22 north of Cochrane, forcing the highway to close for hours.

The Cochrane RCMP received a report of a serious motor vehicle accident at 1:15 a.m. on July 28 at the intersection of Highway 22 and Township Road 281 in Rocky View County, police said in a news release issued Sunday.

“Upon arrival, emergency services observed that a semi-trailer truck and a small SUV had collided while traveling in the same direction,” police said.

“The collision between the vehicles occurred when the truck overcorrected as it came back onto the road from the shoulder, first entering the southbound lane and then back into the northbound lane. The SUV collided with the trailer it was pulling,” police said.

The SUV came to a stop in the southbound lane.

The truck and trailer came to a stop after hitting the guardrail, causing the road surface to slide into the ditch, police said.

The 19-year-old male driver of the truck died at the scene.

“The RCMP extends its sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased,” police said in the release.

There were three occupants in the SUV – two men and a woman – all 26 years old from Calgary.

According to police, they were all treated for non-life-threatening injuries and taken to hospital by ambulance.

The RCMP were still on scene at approximately 11 a.m. Sunday, conducting their investigation with the assistance of the crash reconstructionist.

Motorists are advised to drive with caution as police continue to investigate and delays may occur due to lane closures.
