Top finishers in men and women

Long-distance runners headed to the Bay Area on Sunday for the 2024 San Francisco Marathon.

More than 31,000 runners packed the streets at 5:15 a.m. hoping to finish the marathon. Some even showed a little extra speed. Charlie Lawrence, 29, of Boulder, Colorado, won the men’s race with a time of 2:22.30, while 24-year-old Jenna Wolfrum finished fastest with a time of 2:52.10.

Other notable finishers were Michael Vernau and Jack Rager of San Francisco, who took second and third respectively in the men’s division with times of 2:28.19 and 2:31.58.

Mexico’s Itzu Villarce was second in the women’s event with a time of 2:55.12, while San Francisco resident Sara Bagnell was the top finisher in sixth place with a time of 3:05.41.

Lawrence averaged a pace of 5:26. His overall time was no better than his personal best of 2:16. However, he did beat the time of last year’s winner, Brice Daubord, who finished the race in a time of 2:26.17.

The runners hope to use the qualifying times from this race to qualify for the Boston Marathon and other major races.
