Japan’s Coco Yoshizawa, 14, wins street skateboarding gold at Paris Olympics | News Paris 2024 Olympic Games

Teenager Coco Yoshizawa won the gold medal at the Olympic Games in skateboarding on the historic Place de la Concorde in Paris.

Japan’s 14-year-old Coco Yoshizawa has won gold in the women’s street skateboarding event at the Paris Olympics, in an all-teenager final.

Her Japanese compatriot Liz Akama won silver on Sunday and Brazil’s Rayssa Leal took bronze at the Place de La Concorde.

Yoshizawa scored 272.75 points from her three best runs.

Akama, herself only 15 years old, clocked 265.95 to take second place, while Leal finished on 253.37, well ahead of fourth-placed Cui Chenxi of China.

Leal, who last won silver at the Tokyo Olympics, was the oldest of the three medal winners in the French capital at 16.

After the flood had forced the postponement of the men’s match the day before, the sun shone again on Sunday and the temporary arena turned into a humid cauldron.

Skaters can afford to fall four times in their seven attempts and not score.

Yoshizawa went into her penultimate trick with two big scores, but needed a third to complete her total. She still went for a risky railing, and nailed it.

Although all her rivals still had one run to go, she triumphantly raised her board above her head.

Skateboarding will resume on Monday, but the men’s street event has been moved to Saturday.

With reigning Olympic champion Yuto Horigome, Sora Shirai and 14-year-old Ginwoo Onodera, Japan could dominate again.
